Brief History
Jakarta’s story is one of transformation—from a small port town to Indonesia’s bustling capital. Once known as Sunda Kelapa, the city was an important trading hub in the 14th century, attracting merchants from across Asia. In 1527, it was renamed Jayakarta, meaning “victorious city,” after local forces reclaimed it from Portuguese control.
During the Dutch colonial period, the city became Batavia, serving as the heart of the Dutch East Indies. This era left a lasting legacy, visible today in Jakarta’s Old Town (Kota Tua), where colonial buildings still stand.
After Indonesia gained independence in 1945, the city returned to its current name, Jakarta. Today, it is a vibrant mix of cultures, history, and modern life—a dynamic capital that continues to evolve while honoring its past.
