Brief History
Yogyakarta, often called "Jogja," is known as the cultural heart of Java. Its history dates back to the 18th century when it became the capital of the Mataram Sultanate after a political split from the royal court of Kartasura. In 1755, the Treaty of Giyanti officially established Yogyakarta as a separate Sultanate under the rule of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I.
During Dutch colonial rule, Yogyakarta maintained its royal status, serving as a center of Javanese tradition and resistance. After Indonesia declared independence in 1945, Yogyakarta played a crucial role in the nation’s fight for freedom and even served as the temporary capital of Indonesia from 1946 to 1949.
Today, Yogyakarta is a special region governed by a Sultan, preserving its unique blend of monarchy, cultural heritage, and modern life. It remains a center for traditional arts, classical Javanese dance, batik, and wayang (shadow puppetry), while also being home to world-famous landmarks like Borobudur and Prambanan temples.
