Brief History
Solo, officially known as Surakarta, is one of Java’s oldest royal cities. In 1745, after internal conflicts in the Mataram Sultanate, Pakubuwono II moved the capital from Kartasura to Surakarta, founding what is now known as the Surakarta Sunanate. This marked the beginning of Solo as a royal city.
Shortly after, the kingdom was divided by the Treaty of Giyanti (1755), splitting the Mataram dynasty into two courts: Surakarta (Solo) and Yogyakarta. Despite this division, Solo has remained a center for Javanese culture and tradition, famous for its court arts, gamelan, batik, and classical dance.
Today, Solo continues to celebrate its royal heritage through ceremonies, traditional performances, and festivals, preserving centuries of Javanese history while embracing modern life.
