Brief History
Lasem is a small coastal town in Central Java, often called "Little China" due to its rich Chinese-Indonesian heritage. Its history dates back to the 14th century, when Chinese traders first settled here, making it one of the oldest Chinese enclaves in Java.
Lasem became an important port during the Majapahit Kingdom, welcoming merchants from China and other parts of Asia. In the colonial era, it grew as a center for batik production, blending Chinese and Javanese motifs—a tradition still alive today.
The town also played a role in the anti-colonial resistance during the Dutch occupation. Its old Chinese temples, colonial buildings, and quiet streets are living reminders of a multicultural past that continues to shape Lasem’s identity today.
